Compared to the rest of my treatment plan, this was the easy bit, like mopping up at the end. Going to the hospital for 15 sessions does start to feel like Groundhog Day and by the end of it I was pleased it was over. Luckily, I didn’t get any soreness, just an “itchy jumper” feeling and my skin felt very tight and quite bruised. As I had left sided breast cancer, I had to hold my breath to lift the treatment site away from the heart. I had a rotten cold during radiotherapy and with a nasty cough (yes, I was sure it was lung metasteses) but the Radiotherapists were really nice to me and did some of the sessions with shorter bursts so I didn’t have to hold my breath as long.
Top tips which worked for me:
- Aveeno moisturiser with almond oil in the morning (applied to the skin)
- Aloe vera gel in the evening (applied to the skin)
- Hydrate – I drank plenty of water every day (I aimed for 2 litres).
